Excellent Devotional for the wearyThis devotional helps put our struggles into perspective and gives us strength to persevere because we believe and accept God’s purposes for our trials。 I learned that through our hardships, God is training us to be spiritual soldiers, able to endure increasing levels of uncertainty and stress。 This can only happen by the renewing of our minds, which this devotional has helped me to do through the insights and teaching of Scripture。 It is my favourite devotional Excellent Devotional for the wearyThis devotional helps put our struggles into perspective and gives us strength to persevere because we believe and accept God’s purposes for our trials。 I learned that through our hardships, God is training us to be spiritual soldiers, able to endure increasing levels of uncertainty and stress。 This can only happen by the renewing of our minds, which this devotional has helped me to do through the insights and teaching of Scripture。 It is my favourite devotional book for this reason! 。。。more

This is the second time I’ve read this devotional, the first during university and the second this past year。 Both times I read it during a year of difficulty and it has been a blessing both times, each finding different devotional days that spoke to me strongly。 While some of the language may be a bit dated, I would definitely recommend this devotional to anyone going through a period in the valley。

Amazing Daily DevotionalI’ve read many devotionals over the years, but Streams is the one I want to read over and over。 It is amazing how it speaks directly to my needs。 I’ve shared it with a number of people, and they are now sharing it with others。 It continues to meet each of our needs。

Great, classic devotional。 I recommend picking it up when you're in a desert season and reading through it until the season ends。 I read straight through it over the course of a year, and while most devotionals were great, it felt a bit repetitive and even depressing at times when I was in a non-desert season。 Great, classic devotional。 I recommend picking it up when you're in a desert season and reading through it until the season ends。 I read straight through it over the course of a year, and while most devotionals were great, it felt a bit repetitive and even depressing at times when I was in a non-desert season。 。。。more

Actual rating: 2。5/5Admittedly I have only been reading this for a few months, but this devotional can be very hit or miss to me。 Sometimes it gives me a lot to think about, or is encouraging, etc。 and other times it just falls flat。 I pretty much have stopped reading the poetry because… well, I guess I am not just a big fan of poetry。 I find the short, one line of scripture reference a bit random sometimes。 The occasionally fragmented nature of the devotional are a bit off-putting as well somet Actual rating: 2。5/5Admittedly I have only been reading this for a few months, but this devotional can be very hit or miss to me。 Sometimes it gives me a lot to think about, or is encouraging, etc。 and other times it just falls flat。 I pretty much have stopped reading the poetry because… well, I guess I am not just a big fan of poetry。 I find the short, one line of scripture reference a bit random sometimes。 The occasionally fragmented nature of the devotional are a bit off-putting as well sometimes (as in, the fact that different portions are written by different people)。 So I don’t know。 There are some gems in here, but they’re buried beneath the poetry, random Bible verses, and commentaries all mixed together。 I’m sure it works for many people, it just hasn’t hit the spot for me。 I think the other thing asides from the format that doesn’t sit well with me is occasionally the messaging。 I dunno, this is also just a personal thing。 But being told “suffering will make you stronger” is not always helpful to read when you’re in pain。 I think it’s good to be challenged, and keep the big picture in mind, but dang, sometimes it really just doesn’t help to be told “well, you’ll be stronger by the end of this!” Some days it’s helpful, other days you’re just like, “well, what if I don’t get to the end of this?” I don’t think this is bad messaging or anything but I think different things can be more or less helpful for individual people who are suffering。Update: came across a particularly unhelpful passage today, June 26th。 The opening line: “I suspect that the source of every bit of sorrow in my life can be traced to simple unbelief。” Really?!?!?!? Every bit???? Good grief。 Some of the gripes I have with these passages are the guilt-tripping parts。 Like I said above, it’s good to be challenged, but goodness gracious。 To be told when you’re suffering that actually it’s because you don’t believe enough is just kicking you when you’re down。 I think I should probably just stop reading this because even though there are some gems in here there truly are just… some not great things either。 。。。more

This is a devotional that you read a portion of everyday throughout the year。 It was on my mothers bookshelf when I was growing up。 Now I am reading the updated version and really am so blessed by it。 It readings have been so relevant during a very difficult time in my life, and continue to be so。I can't recommend this enough。 This is a devotional that you read a portion of everyday throughout the year。 It was on my mothers bookshelf when I was growing up。 Now I am reading the updated version and really am so blessed by it。 It readings have been so relevant during a very difficult time in my life, and continue to be so。I can't recommend this enough。 。。。more

Best devotional book I've ever read in my entire life!! I read this book when my father died in 1995。 I found it of great comfort at that time。 When my husband died last year, I decided to read the daily devotional again。 I had forgotten how Cowman used old writings and poetry as the foundations for her entries。 Some of these were comforting, but I found many to be just readings。

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book; I only selected it after doing a search for books about water, since my word of the year for 2022 is water。 It ended up being a lovely, refreshing book of Christian daily devotionals。 The depth and accessibility of this classic (published in the 1920's and widely known in many denominations) surprised and delighted me。 The book was long, but I voraciously enjoyed the 988 pages in about a week。I marked up my eBook copy--sometimes full pages at a time。 I wasn't sure what to expect with this book; I only selected it after doing a search for books about water, since my word of the year for 2022 is water。 It ended up being a lovely, refreshing book of Christian daily devotionals。 The depth and accessibility of this classic (published in the 1920's and widely known in many denominations) surprised and delighted me。 The book was long, but I voraciously enjoyed the 988 pages in about a week。I marked up my eBook copy--sometimes full pages at a time。 Ms。 Cowman shared her own thoughts, coupled with beautiful poetry and quotes from other notable Christians。 The poetry was my favorite, and it made me realize what a lost art rhyming, metered verse is becoming (something near and dear to my heart)。 Following is just a small sample of the material that stood out to me in my reading:"If the Lord careth for thee, be thyself at rest" (Archbishop Leighton)"What is your season today? Are you experiencing a drought? Are you going through a season of great heaviness with dark clouds? Then this is the season for great showers。 Your strength will equal your days, for He has said, 'I will send showers of blessings。' If He can send saving grace, then He can also send comforting grace。 Look up today, you who are dried and withered plant。 Open your leaves and flowers and receive God's heavenly watering。 The fruitful life seeks rain as well as sunshine。""When God wants to make a person, He puts him into some storm。 The history of humankind has always been rough and rugged。 No one is complete until he had been out into the surge of the storm and has found the glorious fulfillment of the prayer, 'O God, take me, break me, make me,'" "One lonely soul on fire with the love of God may set the whole universe ablaze。""Produce your cause。 Bring forth your strong reasons。""Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you His unwavering strength that you may bear it。""Clouds pass; stars remain。""Your Heavenly Father knows。" (Matthew 6:32)"Pray your situation through until you get light。""Quietness and stillness bring the dew。 At night when the leaves and grass are still, the plants' pores are open to receive the refreshing and invigorating bath。 And spiritual dew comes from quietly lingering in the Master's presence。 Get still before Him, for haste will prevent you from receiving the dew。 Wait before God until you feel saturated with His presence。 Then move on to your next duty with the awareness of the freshness and energy of Christ。""When you see a spiritual giant, think of the road over which he has traveled--not the sunny lane where wildflowers ever bloom, but a steep, rocky, narrow pathway where the blasts of hell will almost blow you off your feet, where the sharp rocks cut the feet, where the projecting thorns scratch the brow, and where the venomous serpents hiss on every side。""If they had come down to the riverbank and then stopped, waiting for the water to divide before stepping into it, they would have waited in vain。 They were told to set foot in Jordan before its waters will be cut off。 We must learn to take God at His word and walk straight ahead in obedience, even when we can see no way to go forward。" 。。。more

One of the best devotionals。 It is so encouraging! If you are struggling, enduring a trial, dealing with sorrow—and trial in life grace will be a balm to your soul as it flows from these pages。

I found too many of the daily devotionals to be trite or artificial。 I don’t think I do well with the “smile through the pain” messages。
